Madison decided to walk after school rather than get picked up or ride the bus. I agreed since she would be walking most of the way and we lived in what I would consider a safe community in small-town, USA.
I didn’t work far from school, 4 maybe 5 blocks. The first part of the walk was with lots and lots of kids, but as the walk progressed the crowd dwindled. The last block or two Maddie was alone.
With her destination in sight, an old run down car pulled up next to her. An older gentleman demanded that she get inside. Maddie put her head down and ran not stopping until she was safe by my side.
Maddie had only been a block off the highway. Had he been successful in getting her in the car who knows how far away they would be by the time we figured it all out.
When we realized what had almost just happened, I had to know how she knew what to do. After all, Maddie was only 7. She said that when she looked at him she had a sick feeling.
